Employers ask job seekers for Facebook passwords

Employers ask job seekers for Facebook passwords (The Age)

This seems completely unnecessarily and inappropriate to me. I don’t buy the “if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn’t have a problem with this” attitude. Do you hand over the keys to your house, show your mobile messages, open your mail, listen to your telephone conversations or voice mail, allow a videocam anywhere in your house? What’s the difference?

What do you think?

  1. Might be OK if the correct answer is “no” and it’s a trick question… otherwise I’m sure it falls dangerously close to cybercrime.

  2. When the Age mentions “job seekers” I assume that they are not employees yet–is that right?

If that is the case I (as seeker) would think seriously of telling them that they could “stick their Job”.
